Working together to reduce opioid use
As a research and education charity, the BSM Foundation (BSMF) works closely with the Banff Sport Medicine Clinic (BSM) to enhance the care of clinic patients. This is done by applying the knowledge that is learnt through research into patient care.
Recently, BSMF collaborated with BSM and the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital to enhance the knowledge of BSM patients undergoing surgery.
The goal of this collaboration is to reduce opioid prescribing and the number of chronic opioid dependent patients by implementing a multi-layered patient education initiative that helps patients manage their pain safely after their surgery. Recent research from the PanAm Clinic shows that a similar approach can effectively reduce the number of opioids prescribed.

As part of this initiative, BSMF developed educational resources including patient information sheets and a short video.

After surgery, a standard prescription for Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen is provided to patients, alongside further education delivered by the nursing staff on how to use the prescription.
This is just one small example of how BSMF works with other organizations to improve patient care!
