Clinician-Scientist Summer Studentship

Clinician-Scientist Summer Studentship Program

The BSMF Clinician-Scientist Studentship is a long-standing program that welcomes up to 4 healthcare or medical students to complete 8-12 week summer placements depending on funding availability.

Studentships vary from part-time to full-time from May to August.

These studentships provide unique, hands-on experiences that aim to increase awareness and interest in cross-disciplinary careers in scientific research, medicine, and healthcare. Students work on research projects related to orthopaedic sport medicine, starting with research question design and methods, and continuing through to project presentation and publication.

In addition, students develop patient education content in their areas of interest, which is then freely shared via the BSMF website and social media channels. The studentship participants can also observe patient assessments and orthopaedic surgeries alongside the clinicians, physicians, and surgeons at Banff Sport Medicine.

“… the opportunity to integrate shadowing with my research pursuits highlighted the importance of allowing both research and clinical experience to guide evidence-based medical practice.” ~ George Reed, past participant

“… I was drawn to the placement as it offered me an opportunity to explore the field … and apply my coursework meaningfully, all while returning home to the community where I grew up….. I’m excited to continue to build upon the foundations I’ve developed … as I work towards my goals of medical school and a career in medicine and research. Being a part of this team has helped bring me closer to these goals in countless ways.” ~ Victoria Greene, past participant
