“Dr Hiemstra changed my life with this surgery”
After first dislocating her knee at the age of 15, Alyssa had a trochleoplasty and medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction to treat her patellar (kneecap) instability.
Trochleoplasty – a surgical procedure to reshape the trochlear groove (the groove that holds the kneecap in place)
Here is her story:
I was having back pain and went to physiotherapy where I met Jacynthe Brodeur. She noticed that I was walking with the smallest limp and asked if I had any knee pain. I told her that back in high school I dislocated my knee a couple of times and had received a scope procedure.
She referred me to Dr. Hiemstra.
After my first appointment I knew my life would be changed forever.
Before the surgery I was told I would never be able to ski, hike, run, or swim in a strong current, and this is something I would need to get used to.
I was asked if I would be willing to have a reconstruction on my knee to keep it into place and at that point in my life I would try anything.
After completing my surgery, I was told that I could do anything, and I have.
I got a sunshine pass and went down every run.
I am a certified scuba diver.
I have climbed all of the surrounding mountains in the Bow Valley (Cascade, Rundle, Heart Mountain, Ha Ling, East End of Rundle, The Wedge, Mount Indefatigable, Squaw’s Tit and the list goes on).
Last year I also made a trip to Nepal and made it to Everest Base Camp.
Not only did Dr. Hiemstra change my life but she has made every day a new possibility for me.
I am forever grateful for her and her amazing team!
